FITNESS WHILE TRAVELING

User Experience Research

Course: HCI 445- Inquiry Methods and User Analysis

Team Members: Vicky Moreira, Cathy Liewen, Laurie Penalber, Taylor Greene

PROJECT SUMMARY

Objective

To understand how travelers who exercise (three or more times per week) regularly stay committed to their exercise goals while traveling.

Tools

StormBoard.com, Old Saturated App,  Qualtrics, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Photoshop, and inDesign.

Role

I collaborated with my team members to conduct research and analyses and ultimately report our findings in a deliverable.

Methods

Research Question

Observations, interviews, and surveys

How do active travelers stay fit?

Hypothesis

We first framed early ideas in order to generate the following wo hyphotheses:

H1: People who exercise more frequently are more likely to stay fit while traveling than people who exercise less frequently. For this hypothesis, we define “more frequently” as exercising at least 3 times per week and “less frequently” as exercising less than three times per week.

H2: People who put significant effort in preparing for a trip in advance are more likely to continue their exercise routine while traveling.

OBSERVATIONS

We first conducted five observations to understand how our target audience prepare for trips in order to stay active. We observed five participants pack for an upcoming trip.

INTERVIEWS

To further investigate how people commit to exercise while traveling, we interviewed 5 participants.

SURVEY

Following our interviews, we completed our research with a survey to explore patterns in our previous findings. We also wanted to understand why people stay fit while traveling.

ANALYSIS

Using Stormboard.com, an online collaboration tool, we divided the information among five categories: pre-packing, fitness packing, general packing, nutrition, and fitness. After reviewing these categories, two strong themes emerged: planning and travel.

PERSONAS
We created two personas to represent significant findings from our observations, interviews, and surveys.
EXPERIENCE MAP AND FEATURE MATRIX
The Feature Matrix below summarizes solutions, which can motivate users to exercise while traveling through a preparation plan, tracking features, and more. The feature list is ordered by priority and and is based on users experiences and feedback.
CONCLUSION
High-frequency exercises are more likely to stay fit while traveling than low-frequency exercisers.
High-frequency exercises are more likely to stay fit while traveling than low-frequency exercisers.Preparation is positively correlated with activity level while traveling (weak)
IMPLICATIONS
Making long-term commitments to fitness and health—Being adaptable to new situations when traveling—Research location, fitness accommodations, and weather—Budget your time—Pack fitness-related items

FUTURE WORK

Look into observing active travelers during their journey, instead of limiting our data to packing and preparation.
Investigate solutions to help travelers find their fitness needs (i.e., a fitness-focused hotel booking tool that details gym equipment/gear rental).
Whether or not travel negatively affects workout routines over timeWe initially wanted to look at nutrition, in addition to fitness.
People who work out are often health-conscious. Looking at their food choices would help improve our understanding of discipline and healthy habits while traveling.
